Biography
Michael Joseph Jackson

Michael Joseph Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana on August 29 1958. He was the 7th child of Katherine and Joseph Jackson. Michael showed signs of talent when he was only a toddler. He made his first public performance in front of his kindergarten class at Garnett Elementary school. After that Michael became part of the group "The Jackson 5", which consisted of him and four of his brothers, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon. [Jackson 5 Biography] The Jackson 5 became extremely successful and sold over 100 million albums on the Motown label. While still being a part of the group, Michael had a solo career on the side. He released his first album, "Got To Be There" in 1972. More solo albums followed, "Ben", Music and Me, Forever Michael and a "Best Of" compilation. The single "Ben", was the lead theme to the movie with the same name, and Michael has said it was a great experience seeing his name up there on the white screen. In 1976, the Jackson 5 switched to Epic records and became the Jacksons.

[The Jacksons Biography] The 5th and youngest Jackson brother, Randy, replaced Jermaine, who pursued a solo career. The Jacksons continued to release hit albums until 1984, when they

split as a group. In 1979, Michael, together with Diana Ross [Diana Ross Profile] and Richard Pryor, made a movie entitled "The Wiz". It's a black version of the movie starring Judy Garland. Michael plays the scarecrow and he also appears on the soundtrack to the movie. The same year Michael met producer Quincy Jones and they discussed the possibilities of making a record together. The result is "Off The Wall", which is one of his most successful albums. Michael won a Grammy for "Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. But Michael was disappointed about the album's performance and he vowed that his next solo album would not be ignored. In 1980, the Jacksons earned a star on Hollywood's Walk Of Fame.

Two years later, "Thriller" was released. This album was NOT ignored! It is in the Guinness Book Of Records as the largest selling album to date. In 1983, all Jackson brothers (including Jermaine) is reunited on stage for the Motown 25th Anniversary show. Despite the fact that Michael didn't want to perform (due to the fact that he had done too much television), he did a solo performance of "Billie Jean" and Michael-Mania swept the country. This time, Michael earned 8 Grammys, plus 7 American Music Awards, 4 Black Gold Awards, 4 American Video Awards, 3 MTV Video Awards and the People's Choice Award. Sales as of 1987 are above 42 million records and now it's around the 50 million mark.

In 1984, the Jacksons did their last tour and the album "Victory" was released. It includes a duet with Mick Jagger, which went into the top 5. That year, Michael got his own star on Hollywood's Walk Of Fame, which makes him the ONLY celebrity to have 2 stars there. In 1985, Michael co-wrote "We Are The World" with Lionel Richie for charity. Over 40 stars sang the song that earned a Grammy and became the world's Best Selling Single. Michael's 2nd film, Captain Eo started playing at the Disney-parks. The 15-minute film is done by George Lucas and also includes Anjelica Huston. This film was replaced by "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids", at Disneyland Paris in August 1998. Michael's next solo album was completed and released in the fall of 1987, entitled "Bad". This album went on to be the second biggest selling album in history after "Thriller". Michael embarked on his first solo world tour and it was a sell-out almost everywhere he went. Yet another record!

His first book, "Moonwalk" was published in 1988 and became a bestseller. Alongside the book, Michael releases his movie "Moonwalker", which stars among others Sean Lennon and Joe Pesci and includes the amazing video for "Smooth Criminal" and a performance of the Beatles cover "Come Together". In the eighties alone, Michael sold more than 110 million records.

In 1991, Michael released "Dangerous", with the first single "Black Or White" breaking another record, that amount of people has never watched a music video premiere before. The video, was one of the first in its kind, with stunning special effects. It included stars such as George Wendt, Macaulay Culkin, Bart Simpson as well as Michael's niece, Brandi Jackson [Brandi Jackson Profile]. Michael attended the inauguration celebration of president Clinton and did the Superbowl half time show. Then he went on another world tour, which unfortunately was never completed. Michael became the victim of horrible allegations of child abuse, and cancelled the remaining part of his tour. Any doubters of Michael's innocence:

[Please Read The GQ Article: Was Michael Framed? Here] Indeed, (in my opinion) Michael was framed and put through (as Diane Sawyer said) two years of hell.

In May 1994, Michael married Lisa-Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. [Lisa-Marie Profile] They did an interview together in 1995 around the release of Michael's new album "HIStory - Past, Present & Future, Book 1". They aired his new video "Scream", a duet with his sister Janet. There was much controversy around the song "They Don't Care About Us", but it was all cleared up.

HIStory is a double album, which consists of disc one with greatest hits and disc two of new sings. It was and still is very successful, with sales about equal to "Bad".

Michael was to do an HBO special concert in New York, but is was cancelled due to the fact that Michael was ill. He collapsed in the Beacon Theatre and was rushed to hospital. He was dehydrated with extremely low blood pressure and according to doctors, not a long way from death. This was not the fist time Michael was seriously ill. In the late 70s and early 80s, he was rushed to hospital several times. One time, a blood vessel had been injured resulting in chest pains (Michael thought he was to have a heart attack), after that he broke his nose and had to be operated.

Then during a Pepsi commercial shooting, some explosions went off at the wrong time and he got 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his scalp. Anyway, Michael and Lisa-Marie divorced in 1996, but she had time to be featured in his video for "You Are Not Alone". Michael kicked off his HIStory World Tour In Prague in the fall of 1996, with nearly all concerts being sold out. When Michael was in Sydney, he married Deborah Rowe, a Los Angeles Nurse, who was expecting his child. [Debbie Rowe Profile] She gave birth to their child, Prince Michael Joseph Jackson Jr. On February 13th 1997 (named after Michael's grandfather). [Prince Michael Jackson Jr. Profile]

A few days later, Michael attended Elizabeth Taylor's Birthday Tribute [Elizabeth Taylor Profile] and sang a song in her honor. Later that spring, Michael released "Blood On The Dancefloor - HIStory In The Mix", the soundtrack to his new film "Ghosts". The soundtrack contained remixes of HIStory hits and five brand new songs. A "Ghosts Box Set" was released a while later, including the film, the soundtrack, a programme and a limited edition single of "On The Line", the theme to a Spike Lee film entitled "Get On The Bus". In the fall, the tragic death of Princess Diana reached everyone and Michael cancelled his concert. When he finally did it, it was dedicated to her and he sang two extra songs in her honor. He did an interview with Barbara Walters, in which he spoke about her, fatherhood and living in the spotlights. He also revealed that he would love to have more children, and later we found out that another one was on the way. Paris Michael Katherine Jackson was born on April 3rd 1998. [Paris Jackson Profile] Michael is currently negotiating and planning

theme parks around the world, with his new business partner Don Barden. It is announced the Jackson 5 will reunited for a new album and a series of concerts and Michael is also working on a new solo album. He has also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Price, a price that he most certainly deserves to get. There is a duet with Pavarotti planned and it was to be performed for the first time at a charity concert in Korea, but this has been postponed to May 1999. Michael holds most of the world records in the pop genre and that itself must be some kind of record! There is no doubt about the fact that he is the King of Pop, Rock and Soul!

New Collaborations

16 Feb 99

Michael is working with David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager on a millennium-themed anthem for his new album. Calor Bayer Sager explained to "USA Today" that the three of them are collaborating on "a song to take us into the year 2000 with hope." But they won't do it "if the three of us can't come up with a song that is truly, truly good, beyond good," she added. So far, they've had two sessions, and Carol Bayer Sager has hopes their song will be a reality by next month.

Michael Jackson called Carol Bayer Sager after he heard she and Foster had won a Golden Globe for The Prayer, a duet by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli from The Quest for Camelot. Bayer Sager hadn't spoken with Michael in a couple of years, and she didn't believe it was him on the phone until Michael sang a duet they had done for her album with Burt Bacharach in 1991.

"[Michael] is looking for some peace in his life, and I think he's found it. He seems much more content and at ease with himself," Carol Bayer Sager said. "His 2-year-old (Prince Michael) is so adorable, he didn't want to leave his side. Michael was very wise, he took a rest, he's gathering himself together. When he comes back, it'll be in a way that's undeniable. There's not a radio station in the country that can not play him. He left as the king of pop, he faded out a little, but he'll come back as the king of pop. He didn't lose that title."

On a personal note, Ms. Bayer Sager added, "just when you think you've kind of done it (all), out of the blue comes Michael. It gets your juices going, to try to do a better job."

Press Release From MJJ Productions

05 feb 99

Michael Jackson scores another victory: Judge awards Michael Jackson $200,000 for attorney's fees in copyright case.

A Denver Federal Judge has awarded Michael Jackson $200,000 in attorney's fees as the prevailing party in a copyright infringement case brought by Crystal Cartier. The award comes five years after a Denver federal jury ruled that Jackson did not steal the hit song "Dangerous". The Federal Judge found that the plaintiff's case was "implausible and objectively unreasonable."

Eve Wagner, who represents Jackson, along with local attorneys in Denver, commented on the victory:

"We are delighted with the fee award. Successful artists are often forced to spend significant dollars defending against baseless lawsuits, such as the one brought by Crystal Cartier. Unfortunately, with the contingency fee system, many plaintiff's pay nothing; if they win, they hit the jackpot. In this case, the judge specifically acknowledged that the fee award was appropriate to deter lawsuits against defendant Michael Jackson, who because of his fame and wealth, attracts lawsuits and threats thereof with regularity. Hopefully, the judge's order will send a message that will deter plaintiffs and lawysers from filing frivilous lawsuits." Wagner also remarked, "Jackson has now won four out of four copyright infringement lawsuits brought against him." Previous cases include a 1984 suit involving the Jackson song "The Girl Is Mine" and a 1994 action involving Jackson hits "Thriller", "We Are The World", and "The Girl Is Mine". The most recent victory, in 1998, was the case brought in Italy involving the hit song, "Will You Be There".

Michael Jackson Is a "Normal Dad"

Dec 21 98

World Entertainment News Networka

Superstar MICHAEL JACKSON stunned friends by behaving like a loving - and normal - father.

The THRILLER singer and his daughter PARIS were staying at New York's Trump Tower last week while doing some festive shopping and chose to visit the children of hotel heir RICKY and KATHY HILTON. Both the Hilton kids - BARON, nine, and CONRAD, four - were thrilled by the experience and can't stop talking about the fun they had with the self-proclaimed king of pop.

Jackson was, say the kids, the complete opposite of his "Wacko Jacko" persona. He turned up at their home in jeans and a woolly jumper - without his usual make-up or surgical mask. Jackson wasn't even worried about exposing eight-month-old Paris to the germs of other children, and insisted on letting the little girl join in with the games Baron and Conrad were playing. He did have a nanny in tow - but insisted on spoon-feeding Paris himself. Baron said after their fun day, "He's a really cool dad."

Michael In The Bahamas

13 Dec 98

LEIGH ROBERTS: Bahamas

MICHAEL Jackson, Oprah Winfrey and a bevy of other Hollywood stars are partying with hotel magnate Sol Kerzner this weekend in a $5-million (about R30-million) Bahamas bash.

The celebration is the opening of Kerzner's latest casino resort, th e Royal Towers in Atlantis, on Paradise Island, Bahamas. The Royal Towers is the lavish second phase of the Atlantis resort, and cost $480-million (about R2,8-billion) to complete.

The weekend of fun started on Friday night with a cocktail party. It continued last night with an even bigger party, a n d it ends today with a champagne brunch. Friday night's bash was a case of spotting a celebrity among the mountains of peach roses, oysters and ice crystals. The star who st o le the show - even from the Sun King himself - was Jackson. His bodyguards shuffled around guests and celebrities to make a clear path for the ever-shy singer. Jackson made his entrance arm in arm with South African Prudence Solom on (the former SABC presenter who married Kerzner's right-hand man, Jerry Inzerillo, in Cape Town this year). But Jackson stayed only five minutes, dashing out under the protective arms of his bodyguards, with Solomon in tow. Reed-thin Solomon, who looked stunning in a tight white pants suit, lives in New York and works for a national TV station. Another celebrity who garnered a hefty share of the photographers' flashbulbs was Ivana Trump, elegant in a short black dress and adorned with the inevitable fortune in jewels. Her former husband, real-estate mogul Donald Trump, made a quieter entrance. The brothers Gibb also made an appearance. Maurice was dressed in a long tail coat, and Barry moved sedately through the m ass of photographers. Pretty as a picture was Baywatch star Yasmine Bleeth, in a short black lacy dress that revealed shapely curves. Black was certainly the predominant colour among the celebs, with high ponytails also a favourite among the women (possibly because only the junior hairstylist was available at the salon). Notable exceptions were singer Natalie Cole, in caramel, Ileana Douglas (star of the film The Object of my Affection), in buttercup yellow, and Quincy Jones, in white. The party of 1 200 guests included some SA talent - Felicia Mabuza-Suttle and singer Lebo M (of Lion King fame). Still thin, Mabuza-Suttle described the Royal Towers as fantastic. "Sol really outdid himself." She said she was looking forward to meeting Winfrey over the weekend. The Royal Towers is based on the theme of the legend of the lost continent of Atlantis. The pink-and-white tiered building is surrounded by water - the ocean, the lagoon and huge pools which sharks, moray eels and others call their home.

Michael Causes Stir In The Mall

22 Nov 98

INTERNATIONAL pop idol Michael Jackson caused a stir when he took an unexpected night stroll through an upmarket Johannesburg shopping mall this week.

The star's surprise walkabout attracted a crowd that followed him yelling, "Michael, we love you", as he breezed through the corridors of Sandton City for about 20 minutes on Thursday night.

Accompanied by 10 of his bodyguards, Jackson arrived at the mall at 9.45pm and was taken on a tour past several boutiques, most of which were closed, and restaurants, much to the delight of the diners.

Many at first thought the man dressed in black, donning a silk scarf over his face, was an impostor, but they were convinced he was the real thing when his heavies prevented them from getting closer than within 5m of him...

One man in the crowd begged Jackson's aides to bring the star to his restaurant for a free cup of coffee. When he got no reaction, he upped his offer to a free meal.

Jackson, who sneaked into South Africa last Saturday for a short private holiday, refused to sign autographs for his fans at the mall - in contrast to his mood earlier in the week when he happily spoke to, and mingled with, fans at Sun City.

Timbaland says he'd love to work with Michael

19 Nov 98

Like fellow superproducer, Sean "Puffy" Combs another fan of the King of Pop - Timbaland has sent urban radio in a new direction. Not by just remixing old songs, a style that has worked for Combs. Timbaland's about creating songs that have layers of different beats and sound effects, that can change tempo midway through the record. Janet Jackson is among many artists featured on Timbaland's new album, "Tim's Bio. From the Motion Picture: Life From Da Bassment", which is scheduled for release November 24. One name that isn't on the album: Michael Jackson. But Timbaland would like to work with him someday. "I want to do a Michael Jackson album and go back to the Thriller days", he says.

A Thriller on Wall Street

17 Nov 98

(Newsweek)

Michael Jackson wants to be a hit with investors By Johnnie L. Roberts

Michael Jackson periodically pops into public view, his emergence often stage-managed in minute detail, including the well-placed tabloid leak. There he is before the cameras with his latest business partner--a Saudi prince or a prominent African-American entrepreneur--unveiling megabuck plans for amusement parks or casinos from Warsaw to Detroit. Here he is in the New York Post supposedly house-hunting in a Manhattan ZIP code with stratospheric sales prices, a getaway from his famed Neverland Ranch, with its amusement rides and petting zoo. Or there's a mention of his days spent crooning to his two babies, while his wife--an assistant to his plastic surgeon--heads off to work.

The houses, the hotel suites, the staff all add up to one of the most lavish lifestyles in show business. Now, to help keep it all going, the King of Pop is turning up in a new venue--Wall Street. He is hoping to pull off a high- finance coup to the tune of $100 million or more. How? Float Jackson bonds.

The financial move would be slick but simple. Selling the bonds would allow Jackson to, in effect, borrow against future royalties from golden oldies, including early Beatles hits, that he owns. The eccentric performer began to consider the strategy last year, several music-industry executives say. Former EMI Capitol Music boss Charles Koppelman, backed by Prudential, now has the inside track to underwrite Jackson bonds. In an interview, Koppelman was mum on Jackson, but said he is poised to announce $250 million worth of music-royalty deals. Jackson's longtime adviser, attorney John Branca, didn't respond to calls.

On Wall Street, a bull market in old tunes may be slowly emerging. In 1997 glam-rocker David Bowie issued "Bowie bonds," becoming the first to employ the novel approach of raising a lump sum--$55 million--secured by anticipated royalties on his old compositions--25 of his pre-1990 albums. David Pullman, a financier who advised Bowie, pioneered the new-wave showbiz financing. Like Bowie, Jackson would receive immediate cash, while investors would reap the future royalties from songs he controls. Jackson's holdings include some of pop music's biggest hits. In the mid-1980s, he acquired about 250 Beatles tunes, including "Yesterday" and "Let It Be." They now are part of Sony/ATV, one of the largest music publishers, with control of more than 120,000 songs, including hits by Babyface and Mariah Carey. Jackson co-owns it with Sony. Industry experts estimate that Sony/ATV earns at least $50 million annually before expenses and royalty payments to songwriters. Jackson also owns Mijac, which controls his own hits, including "Billie Jean" and "Thriller." It grosses an estimated $15 million annually.

Mirror's Apology To Michael

11 Nov 98

(The Daily Mirror)

THE MIRROR AND MICHAEL JACKSON

Back in 1992 prior to Michael Jackson's then world tour we published some photos of Michael Jackson, particularly close up photos of his nose and face.

We suggested that they showed him to be hideously disfigured and scarred. He immediately issued legal proceedings against us strongly denying the allegations.

During the course of the proceedings we recently went to Los Angeles together with an eminent expert in plastic surgery to view his face close up. The inspection showed that, in fact, his face is not disfigured. As a result our lawyers met with Mr Jackson's lawyers and a confidential deal was thrashed out bringing an overdue end to the legal proceedings which we are both happy with.

We also apologised for the suggestion that he was hideously disfigured or scarred. We saw for ourselves this was not the case. Both sides last night expressed their satisfaction that the litigation has been amicably resolved.

Kevin Bays of Davenport Lyons, the Mirror's solicitors, said: "We are glad this matter has been resolved so amicably, it has gone on long enough and hopefully we can now put it behind us."

Chandler In New York

THE picket lines around ABC headquarters in Manhattan Monday obscured the lone figure of Ray Chandler, who was carrying his own sign about his grievance with the network.

Chandler, uncle of the boy who was paid a settlement after accusing Michael Jackson of sexually molesting him, was there with his banner claiming ABC and Diane Sawyer had treated Jackson with kid gloves in an exclusive interview for "Prime Time Live."

"I'm afraid I got rather lost in the crush," Chandler told me yesterday. "But I'm not letting up." Chandler flies home to Santa Barbara today and will begin sifting t hrough all the talk-show invitations he's received.

Michael Sued For Copyright Infrin gement Once Again!

05 Nov 98

A Belgian man named Yves S wo lf s, who not only draws comic-strips but also composes music, is suing Michael Jackson for copyright infringement. Swolfs is demanding 75 million Belgian Franc in damages, claim in g Jackson has copied his music. Yves Swolfs is one of Belgium's most famous Comic-strip drawers, and has also been somewhat successful with his music. During 1987 he wrote the song "Boulevard Des Rves Briss" (The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams), and he claims that Jackson has stolen the main theme of the song for his hit "Give In To Me", a song included on his very successful 1991 album "Dangerous". Both songs are released by Warner Chapell Music, and the company is considered to be in a very difficult situation, when the case is tried this Friday in Brussels, Belgium.

It's a family plague!

29 Oct 98

Here is one of today's headlines from Fox News:

Michael Jackson is under attack again. Ray Chandler, the uncle of the Southern California boy who accused Jacko of molestation, is launching a campaign accusing ABC and the singer of ratings-driven conspiracy. The law student says he plans to picket ABC's corporate headquarters in New York. "It's about ABC more than it is about Jackson", Chandler tells Dish. "I believe there was out and out collusion between Jackson and ABC to cover up the charges. I've written a 30-page document that tells the story of the ABC coverup". Chandler is referring to the June 14, 1995, airing of ABC's PrimeTime Live, in which Diane Sawyer interviewed Jackson and his wife at the time, Lisa Marie Presley. Chandler accuses Sawyer of lying on the air, and alleges that ABC knowingly covered up evidence which, he claims, could prove that Jackson has molested children. "I have never met Michael, and this is not a personal attack on him", Chandler says. "This is strictly about journalism. ABC had substantial evidence that Michael was guilty, but Michael needed someone with credibility to help him get his career back on track." Chandler is quick to point out that he does not "represent my brother and nephew. They have a contract of silence with Michael. My personal opinion is that Michael is the best example of the cyclical nature of child abuse. In my mind, Michael is to be pitied as much as he is loathed." ABC had not returned our calls at press time, but Jackson's spokesman tells Dish, "We put this behind us long ago. We have no intention of dignifying Mr. Chandler's accusations with a response".

Michael's party does not want to respond to Chandler because they do not want to give him any importance. MJJ World also feels that ignoring Chandler is the best thing to do; his allegations are just a bunch of crap, without evidence. He pretends he is not after Michael, but that's just an excuse not get into trouble. We mentioned the story however because, sadly, it could have another bad impact on Michael's reputation in the US.

Michael Jackson, developer seeks Vegas casino

22 Oct 98

NEW YORK, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Pop superstar Michael Jackson and a Detroit developer are interested in buying a Las Vegas hotel and casino from Starwood Hotels & Resorts for about $375 million, sources familiar with the situation told Reuters on Thursday.

A meeting between Jackson, his business partner Don Barden and Starwood Chief Executive Barry Sternlicht could take place as early as next week, said the sources, who did not want to be identified.

Located on the famed Las Vegas strip, the Desert Inn is a 715-room luxury resort that has been on the auction block for more than a year and recently underwent a $200 million renovation and expansion. Starwood, which owns Sheraton and Westin hotels and Caesars World casinos, acquired the property earlier this year as part of a $10.2 billion purchase of former conglomerate ITT Corp.

Jackson and business partner Don Barden have been looking to build or buy an entertainment resort for some time, but so far their efforts have been unsuccessful. Earlier this year, the pair lost out to MGM Grand Inc. in a bid to win a casino franchise in Detroit.

Barden is chairman of Majestic Star Casino, which owns a riverboat casino in Gary, Ind. He confirmed the Desert Inn interest to Reuters in a telephone interview, but said that there have been no talks yet with Starwood's Sternlicht.

"We have not had any talks. There was an effort to meet with them, but that has not been done yet," said Barden, adding that he hopes to set up a meeting soon.

A source familiar with the situation, who did not want to be identified, said the original meeting had been postponed due to an unexpected schedule change by Jackson and that a new session could take place as early as next week.

Barden did not comment on a price, but one source said the resort was expected to fetch $380 million.

Jackson could not be reached for comment.

A Starwood spokesman declined to comment, but reiterated that the Desert Inn is for sale and a number of parties have expressed interest.

Barden and Jackson have been scouting casino and hotel properties in recent months, including beachfront property in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Desert Inn " fits our objectives, as well as a couple of other ones that we are interested in pursuing. We are focused heavily in Las Vegas, " Barden said.

Although casinos have sprouted all across America in recent years, Las Vegas is still considered the nation's prime gambling haven. Development has exploded and elaborate entertainment complexes are being built to lure everyone from Asian high rollers to families with small children.

Just last week, the luxury Bellagio resort opened its doors, touting 3,000 rooms, an Italian theme and a $285 million collection of paintings by such masters as Renoir and Picasso.

The Desert Inn, by contrast, is considered a more subdued resort noted for its relative quiet and 18-hole championship golf course.

The property was put on the auction block by ITT Corp. last year as part of an attempt to fend off a hostile takeover from Hilton Hotels. ITT also considered selling part of the resort to billionaire Marvin Davis, but those negotiations fell apart.

Starwood, which eventually bought ITT in a friendly transaction, is also seeking to unload the property. In addition to soliciting buyers, Starwood has considered converting the property into a time-share vacation residence.
